What is Upanayanam Ceremony?

UPANAYANA:

Among the sixteen Hindu purificatory rites, Upanayana or Sacred thread ceremony is the most important one. Upa means- near, Nayana-led. So Upanayana means leading the student to the Guru. Guru initiates the child to Brahma Vidya (Knowledge of Truth) through Gayatri Mantra. Therefore the other name for this ceremony is "Gayatrimantropadesha". During this ritual the preceptor puts a yagnopavita on the student's shoulder and gives him a staff. The staff represents- self control. Three strands in the yagnopavita symbolises:- thought, word and action. That means the student who has the yagnopavitam should maintain control over thought, word and action. This ritual marks the Youth stage of life. At this time the student is called a Vatu or Dvija, meaning twice born. Parents give birth to this physical body but the Guru through the Brahmopadesha transforms the student to a nobler person. This samskara brings confidence, good memory, brilliance and purity in the child. Then only child becomes fit for subtler spiritual knowledge.
